Glasshouse Salon

Leyla Rudolf

Sustainability, organic ingredients and natural colour are the cornerstones of ‘green’ hair salon, Glasshouse. Fabled Editor, and recent convert to cleaner hair care, Leyla Rudolf, books an appointment.

In the last six months I’ve been on a hair ‘journey’ of sorts. Starting with letting my hair colour grow out and embracing my natural hue (only to decide I didn’t really like my mid-brown shade), going ‘no poo’ (Google it), and then going back again because I couldn’t get past the waxy stage. I’ve converted completely to organic-only products, cut out the non-natural styling stuff and letting my hair air-dry much more often. My healthy hair obsession also led me to discover Glasshouse, a small hair salon in Hackney that specialises in uncomplicated cuts and colour, organic and natural ingredients, and long-term hair health rather than fast fixes. I booked an appointment for the following week.

Set within Netil House, an old college and council block on the corner of Mare Street, Glasshouse is possibly the smallest salon I’ve ever been in. But don’t let its size fool you. It may be small but it only adds to the secrecy of the space – it feels like something special you happened to have stumbled upon. Founded in 2013 by hair stylist and colour expert Olivia Crighton, Glasshouse’s ethos comes from Olivia’s strong belief in the superiority of natural hair products – the salon has used the plant-based Organic Colour Systems since its launch and also stocks cult natural and organic beauty brands such as RMS, Ilia, and Austin Austin.

But what about the hair? Being a half-head-of-highlights girl I’m used to bleach based colouring and the smell and uncomfortable tingle that often comes with it – but the ammonia-free powder lightener they use at Glasshouse doesn’t have any of the same effects. And the care products (Senior Stylist Mia Waldren recommended I use Organic Colour Systems Power Build Shampoo and the Aqua Boost Leave-In Conditioner to add some oomph to my fine hair) leave my hair and scalp feeling fresh and in the best condition. Post blow-dry my colour is cool, creamy, and light and honestly, I really, really love it. Consider me a convert.
